Olivier Busquet wins EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller
The expectations couldn't possibly be higher for the European Poker Tour and the Barcelona stop was by far the most anticipated event. This was the 100th stop for the prestigious European competition and the fact that it all began with the €50,000 Super High Roller meant a great deal. Regular poker players had no option but to sit back and watch some of the best poker pros in the world compete among themselves, in a dazzling display of skill. There are plenty of side events to participate and qualifiers still run live at Unibet Poker for the main event, so even those who don't have a lot of money could find themselves playing at the live tables in Barcelona. For the time being, Olivier Busquet is the one celebrating, because he became the first player to win a tournament in Barcelona this season, after outshining a total of 77 players. This means that a new record has been set, because last year only 64 players participated and as a result the prize pool grew significantly. The winner was guaranteed an amount of more than €1 million, but players were given the option of reaching an agreement at any time during the final table. This is something that usually happens in major tournaments, because when the stakes are as high as they get, even poker professionals prefer not to let luck decide the outcome. Plenty of pros participated, but only the nine who made the final table finished in the money, with Dan Shak being one of the lucky few. He survived with his dwindling stack long enough to claim a consolation prize of €130,000, with Morten Klein being the next to be sent to the rail. A new tournament in the Heartland Poker Tour concluded this week and this time it was the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles in St. Charles, Missouri that acted as a gracious host. The land-based casino has attracted a great deal of poker fans, including some that usually participate exclusively in online tournaments. A couple of tournaments have crowned the winners in North America and the hottest poker action unfolds in Europa, but things do happen in the Far East. Over the internet tournaments and cash games run unabated at Unibet Poker, so those who don't have the time and money to play in live events won't get bored this Autumn. The Australia New Zealand Poker Tour came to an end yesterday and the 34 remaining players sat down at the tables in an attempt of surviving the bubble stage. The top prize exceeded expectations and sits at AU$253,000, making it a tempting proposition for the survivors and providing the incentive to make the final table. Michael Chrisanthopoulos was the first one to be sent to the rail and for his performance of finishing in the 34th place, he claimed AU$4600. One by one, players were eliminated and as the final table drew closer, action subsided and the survivors shifted into a more passive gear. Chip leaders changed at a fast pace and Edison Nguyen was only for a brief time at the top of the leaderboard, but always within striking distance of the leader. It was pretty obvious that he will make the final table and by the time 13 players were left, he had one of the deepest stacks. The official final table would only feature nine players, which meant that Michael Caruana had to be eliminated for this late stage to begin. All the players left were guaranteed a five digit amount, but making the heads-up would make players considerably richer. That's why it took so long for three handed play to come to a conclusion, as Dennis Huntly was unwilling to take any chances. Eventually, he had no choice but to go all in and was eliminated, with his chips going to Nguyen and this gave him a narrow advantage over Corey Kempson. As soon as the heads-up began, the two players started to discuss the terms of a deal and the agreement was quickly reached, with the money being split. The winner would claim $7500 more, which was hardly a significant amount and that prompted players to shift to a rather reckless style of poker. The organizers were concerned that the game was not taken seriously enough by the two players and urged them to rethink the deal. What happened next was rather surprising, as the two players went all in without looking at their cards and luck was on Edison Nguyen's side.
